​​2023 Kitchen Backsplash Trends and Ideas

One of the most important decisions you’ll make when renovating your kitchen is selecting the backsplash. It’s important to choose carefully as it can make or break your kitchen design. 

Whether you want it to be the focal point or to fall back into the background there is something for everyone. 

Let’s explore which backsplash styles are predicted to gain popularity and find its way into our homes. 

1. Slabs of Marble

Nothing says luxury like a slab of marble running up your kitchen wall. This design style is classic, and timeless and will continue to dominate our kitchens in the coming years. If you like an expensive-looking kitchen with a high-end feel, then this design style is for you.

2. Slabs of Granite 

Granite is another timeless and classic backsplash that isn’t going anywhere in 2023. Much like marble, granite will give your kitchen a more luxurious vibe.  If you like the high-end vibe but prefer something more durable and heat-resistant then this backsplash style is just for you.

3. Statment Backsplash

Bold and dramatic kitchen decor is a design trend that has seen popularity over the last year. So many of us are done with the minimal neutral cookie-cutter kitchen that has dominated.

Create a statement with your backsplash and add color to make it a focal point in your kitchen. Make sure it’s a color that you love because you will be looking at it every day! 

Artisan-style backsplashes are also a great choice for making a statement. The unique shapes and colors of the artisan style can be paired with simple countertops with one color for balance. If you love the handmade aesthetic this would be a great choice. 

Dark and moody backsplashes are also trending right now. Nothing makes a statement like a black slab of marble running up your wall. 

4. Countersplash 

A countersplash is when the same material and pattern that is used on the countertop extends seamlessly to the backsplash.

Interior designers are loving the countersplash as it adds a clean and sleek look to your kitchen’s visual appeal.  

This kitchen trend is clean, modern, fresh and best of all you will only need to choose one material.

5. Ceiling High Backsplashes 

Gone are the days when backsplashes had to stop at the countertops. We are seeing them extend to the ceilings and beyond. If you have a material and style that you absolutely love then consider extending it to cover the entire wall above the counter space. 

6. Mixed Materials 

Instead of having one material type as your backdrop mixing them is also a great option. This is a trend that has gained popularity in the interior design space and will continue into the new year. 

Imagine a marble slab rising up to the cabinets and transitioning into a wood, metal or patterned backsplash. It’s a unique focal point that creates interest to your kitchen aesthetic. 

7. Vintage Aesthetic 

Vintage decor has been experiencing a resurgence for a couple of years now. If you are looking to invoke a cozy, nostalgic and rustic vibes into your space then consider incorporating backsplashes inspired by the vintage style. Funky patterns, tiles and wallpaper-inspired backdrops is all the craze right now. 

8. Geometric Patterns

The use of geometric patterns is set to be a hot trend in 2023. With interior design trends such as Art Deco gaining popularity it’s no wonder it’s found its way into our kitchens. 

Geometric backsplashes are creative, fun and unique. The use of shapes such as chevron, herringbone, fish scales and hexagons bring an eclectic feel to your kitchen decor. 

9. Subway Tiles

Subway tiles are a good choice as a backsplash because they are classic, timeless, and fit a variety of design styles. They can be aligned vertically, horizontally, in a herringbone style or the traditional 50/50 offset pattern.

This type of backdrop is popular and we will continue to see it be a go-to choice for homeowners. White is a common pick but pops of color, browns and grays fit beautifully with this design as well. 

10. Mirrored Backsplash 

If your style is glam and bold then you will love the look a mirrored backsplash brings to your modern kitchen. 

It gives the illusion of more space, it’s easy to clean, reflects light and adds a touch of sparkle to your space. 

A slab mirror is a traditional look, but you could also pick ones that are tinted with color, have intricate mosaic designs or incorporate them as tiles. 

11. Metallic Chic

Metal backsplashes are sleek and polished giving your overall kitchen design an industrial and chic feel. It involves the use of metals such as tin, bronze, brass and copper as a kitchen backdrop.

The industrial design aesthetic is a popular trend right now and we see it being incorporated into design trends such as Steampunk Decor and Gothic Interior Design.
