Are you excited to remodel your kitchen and have your mind set on a particular style or design? You may want to first consider which design trends are falling out of favor to avoid having an outdated home.

Let’s explore which kitchen design styles will no longer be popular in 2023.

1. Appliances Above The Range

Appliances over the range are no longer in favor. Although it has been common for over a decade, this trend is officially over.

From now on we are tucking our microwaves and range hoods behind our cabinetry. Integrated cabinets are all the rave right now and we are seeing them incorporated into more homes.

Let’s keep them neatly hidden to create a sleek and cohesive look for your modern space.

2. All-White Kitchens

All white kitchens are out of style and outdated. They are slowly becoming a thing of the past and are no longer desired by homeowners and interior designers.

They have their appeal because they are easy to clean and there isn’t much effort that goes into their selection. It’s also associated most with cleanliness.

However, we are doing away with the sterile monochromatic look and finding new ways to decorate our home.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t have any white at all, rather you should enhance it by adding natural elements, pops of color and some textures to give your space more depth.

Consider some of the kitchen colors that will be popular in 2023 such as sage green, charcoal black, lavender, and dusty blue.

If color really isn’t your thing then try adding some tans, beiges or grays instead.

3. Shaker-Style Cabinets

Although shaker-style cabinets have been extremely popular amongst homeowners, lately we are seeing a shift towards flat panels.

We are craving something new and are tired of seeing the same type we’ve been seeing for decades. Slab panels are an excellent choice because they are sleek, chic and contemporary.

4. High Gloss Cabinets

High gloss kitchen cabinets are out of style for 2023. If you are remodeling leave this in the past as it adds a strongly dated feel to your overall design.

Instead, consider matte or flat finishes as they will give off a more unique, contemporary and high-end feel to your space.

5. Open Concept Kitchens

It seems as though this has been a popular choice for so long but open-concept kitchens are no longer the most desirable and are falling out of favor.

Rather than having every room connected and open to one another, interior designers are noticing each room becoming its own little space separate from the rest through the use of screens, walls and even doors.

This is because having a home that flows together doesn’t leave much room for privacy, the space appears cluttered and has poor sound control.

6. Brass Faucets

Brass is a beautiful material when used to accessorize a space appropriately to fit a desired aesthetic such as moody decor or in a powder room.

However, using brass as your faucet has quickly come and gone as the desired choice.

If you really love brass then consider incorporating it into your light fixtures instead, it’s easier to swap should you get tired of it!

7. Built-in Small Appliances

In 2023 we are doing away with small appliances that are built into the cabinetry. The technology of these items such as air fryers and coffee makers change so often that you’ll need to switch them.

Instead, consider purchasing them separately and creating a space where they can be stowed away when not in use.

If you like to display the ones that you use often then purchase aesthetically pleasing ones so that it fits well with your decor. Hallman and Smeg have some beautiful small appliances if you’re looking for inspiration.

8. Colorful Large Appliances

The idea of having large colorful appliances might seem like a good idea however they will quickly become outdated.

Appliances are at the center, expensive and offer the most resale value to a space. I always encourage classic and timeless stainless steel ovens, ranges, dishwashers, and refrigerators.  If that isn’t your thing then matte black and white are great options too.

9. Farmhouse Style

Farmhouse decor is a thing of the past. This super trendy look had its run for a while but interior designers are finding it too tacky. It comes off like a theme and can end up dating your space.

If you absolutely love the look of rustic interiors then consider incorporating only a few pieces such as wooden picture frames or some farmhouse-inspired fixtures.

10. Herringbone Backsplashes

Herrigngone backsplashes are going out of style in 2023. This pattern became popular over the last few years however it has quickly fallen out of favor in the interior design world.

11. Upper Cabinetry

Open kitchen shelves

Upper cabinetry is slowly becoming a thing of the past as open shelving becomes more popular.

This is not to say that you shouldn’t have any, rather pick a section where you can display some of your fine dishware and china.

If open shelves are not for you then you can install some glass cabinetry instead. I find this makes your space look luxurious and high-end, especially if you incorporate some inner lights.
