How to Make Your Kitchen Look Expensive (even on a budget)
Making your kitchen look good does not have to be a daunting task. I’ve curated some simple interior design tips on how you can make your kitchen look expensive and luxurious even if you are working with a budget. Whether you are renovating, sprucing it up, or upgrading for resale the tips below will guide you to creating the high-end kitchen of your dreams!
Let’s explore the different ways that you can bring luxury and style into your kitchen aesthetic.
1. Invest in Mid to High-End Kitchen Appliances
The number one thing in your kitchen that will instantly make it look high-end is the appliances. Appliances alone are a statement piece so if there is one thing your budget will allow you to splurge on, it’s definitely this!
If you are renovating or swapping out your old appliances then take the time to research some middle to higher-end models.
Some of the premium brands that are most popular are Sub-Zero Wolf, Miele, Thermadore, and Gaggenau. They are on the expensive end so if you are looking for ones that are more affordable yet luxurious then consider brands such as KitchenAid, Thor, Bosch, Smeg or Hallman.
If you are wondering if premium is for you, I’ve written an article that highlights the reasons why high-end kitchen appliances are worth the investment.
If you are on a very tight budget or just don’t want to spend a ton of money then no worries, you can still achieve the lux look. Companies such as Samsung and LG have some really affordable and beautiful design styles that can still look exquisite. The main thing to look for is sleekness. For example, pick a range where the knobs and timer settings are on the front, rather than the top back.
I recommend that you spend more money on the oven, range and refrigerator and save money on the dishwasher, toaster oven, and microwave.
2. Choose Stainless Steel Appliances
When it comes to home decor and interior design selecting the right finishes is key to creating a luxury look.
Stainless steel is classic, timeless and has excellent resale value. There is something about it that exudes elegance so consider this finish for your kitchen.
For more information, I’ve written an article on how to choose kitchen appliances that I recommend you check out.
If you prefer other finishes then white or black is also a decent option.
3. Select Light Fixtures that Make a Statment
The best way to add glam to your kitchen is by choosing lighting fixtures that have a high-end vibe giving your modern kitchen a lavish look.
If you aren’t sure what lux lighting even looks like then check out One Kings Lane for some inspiration, they sell beautiful designer lights at different price ranges.
For something more budget-friendly, stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Perigold and Ikea have a fantastic selection of lighting at reasonable prices.
If you have a kitchen island choose pendant light fixtures that are glass, brass or have a matte finish. Ensure that you pick the appropriate size for a cohesive and balanced look. Placement can be tricky so be sure to check out my article on how to pick kitchen island lights for a complete guide.
You might also consider illuminating under the cabinets to give your space a high-end feel. Here is a short article on how to add under-cabinetry lighting to help you along the way.
Lastly, you could add some sleek recessed ambient lighting. Pair it with a dimmer and you are ready to set the mood in your designer kitchen.
4. Integrate Your Range Hood
Integrated range hoods are incorporated behind the cabinetry to create a seamless and unified kitchen design.
These types of hoods have been popular for some time now and they will continue to be in style for years to come. If you aren’t able to build it into your cabinets you could also create a custom cover.
If you have space in your budget definitely cover your hood as it will give a lavish and rich look.
5. Pick Modern and Sleek Kitchen Cabinets
There are many different types of cabinetry you could consider for your kitchen. For example, there are beaded, shaker, or flat panels.
If you are renovating or swapping out your cabinets then the flat panels are an excellent choice. With their clean lines and seamless look, these will give your kitchen a modern, chic and luxurious vibe.
Soft-close cabinets are considered a premium feature. This addition can cost a lot if you go to your local makers because it’s an upgrade. However, IKEA has some fantastic options at an insanely reasonable price.
You could also opt to have a section of your cabinets frosted or clear glass. This will allow you to display some of your very best kitchenware and China.

6. Choose Hardware with Luxury Details
A kitchen’s hardware is details such as your cabinet handles, faucet, sink, fixtures, wall sockets or even curtain rods. The style and material of these items are really important and will elevate your design style when done correctly.
Treat your hardware like jewelry to give your space a glamorous look
For those of you that aren’t replacing your cabinets and simply want to upgrade them in a more affordable way, consider replacing their handles. Places such as Rejuvenation and Pottery Barn will offer a great selection but are on the pricier side. However, stores such as Home Depot and Lowes have some nice styles that are very affordable. Sleek shapes that are bronze, gold or matte are a great option.
7. Pick Your Countertops and Backsplash Carefully
Choosing a countertop and backsplash might be one of the more difficult decisions, but it’s important to choose carefully as it will serve as an aesthetic backdrop.
By selecting the right material, patterns and color you will give your space an exquisite feel.
A beautiful slab of marble countertop extending up as your backsplash is the ultimate lux vibe, but it’s also the most pricey. So unless you are looking to spend a ton of money you’re likely looking for something more affordable.
Consider mid-end materials such as quartz or granite, they are cheaper than marble yet give off that expensive feel you’re looking for.
Avoid subway tiles as a backsplash because they are not considered high-end
If you are on an even tighter budget then you could certainly go laminate, just be sure to pick a nice pattern, and color and ensure it’s seamless. You could even do some DIY backsplashes, there are a ton of crafty people on youtube who can guide you through some ideas.

8. Consider Your Flooring Options
The right type of flooring is essential to creating the ultimate vibe for your kitchen design. Just like the appliances and cabinets, the floors can also add value to your home.
If you are renovating or replacing your floors you will want to select a style that will elevate the design of your kitchen.
Although on the more costly side, for the ultimate lux look consider marble, stone, or hardwood floors.
For something more in the mid-range then consider porcelain or ceramic tiles.
If you are looking to save the most money then try vinyl. I’ve seen vinyl that imitates marble and stone and the look is just as good as the real thing.
Now if you are keeping your floors and are not spending a ton of money on them you could simply incorporate a well-made rug runner with beautiful patterns.
Check out my article on how to pick kitchen flooring for more guidance.
9. Pick a Luxury Color Palette
Selecting an appropriate color scheme for your home is extremely important for creating a luxurious aesthetic.
If you’ve ever seen a higher-end kitchen you will notice there isn’t a whole lot of color in the mix!
The best colors for a luxurious kitchen are neutral colors, white, and black. These colors are classic, timeless, and exude affluence. Keep your large appliances, walls, cabinetry and floors simple. Add pops of colors in other areas such as small appliances, wall art and decorative pieces.
10. Add Elegant Wall Art & Decorative Pieces
The easiest way to make your kitchen look luxurious on a budget is through the use of wall art and decorative pieces. Visit your local antique shops, explore Etsy for printable wall art, and check out thrift shops and flea markets.
Some ideas for beautiful decorative pieces are stone bowls, moss balls, vases, cookbooks, plants, flowers and wooden cutting boards.
If you have a blank wall then you could display some of your favorite artwork. Be sure to keep it cohesive and minimal for an elegant vibe. If you aren’t sure what to put up then check out my article on how to fill an empty kitchen wall for ideas.
11. Keep it Clean, Organized and Decluttered
Keeping your space clean and clutter-free is the easiest way to have a kitchen that feels well-kept and maintained. There is nothing lavish about a space that is dirty, unorganized and full of stuff.
Clear your countertops and hide items you don’t use every day. If you have to keep small appliances out then consider purchasing ones that are sleek and aesthetically pleasing. Smeg has some really cute coffee makers, toasters and kettles.
It should go without saying but keep your kitchen looking and smelling clean. Schedule a weekly deep clean and use cleaning products that smell fresh.
Organize your spices, teas, pasta and any other items in jars or containers and keep those hidden as well.
