There seems to be something for everyone and a push towards freedom of expression through interior design. The possibilities are endless so let’s take a deeper dive.

Once seen as an outdated interior design style that not only was popular in the 70s and 80s, but has been around for centuries, this style has made a comeback in a huge way! This trend will continue into 2023 and you will see these lovely rounded doorways incorporated into more homes.

Statement Walls Are Here to Stay In 2023

What is a statement wall

This is an accent wall that is completely different from all the other walls in the room. It stands out with various art pieces and colors and draws attention with its uniqueness.

Which wall should be the statement wall

You can work with a blank wall but if you have a fireplace or shelves you could build your statement wall around that.

Should accent walls be light or dark

The choice is yours however be sure to create a contrast with your choice. For example, if your wall is a nude soft pink then contrast it with artwork that is brighter or complimentary (and vice versa). In addition, if your space is smaller, a lighter color will make it look larger and if your space is larger then you can do a darker tone if you choose.

The feature wall has been around for a few years but it’s not out of style and is expected to continue into 2023. You can get really creative here and use this as an opportunity to express yourself and your individual style.

The use of natural, organic and sustainable materials in home decor has gained huge popularity over the last year and is predicted to dominate in 2023. Interior design trends inspired by wellness and sustainability incorporate the use of natural materials, shapes and earthy color palettes.

What are interior design styles inspired by sustainability and wellness? Here are some of the top design trends to dominate in the coming year.

  • Modern Organic Decor: This style incorporates organic materials, nature-inspired colors, clean lines, smooth surfaces and rounded shapes. Think woods, leather, stones, wool and plants. For colors think earth tones such as browns, greens, and grays. It’s a modern minimalist design style creating a boho chic vibe inspired by nature.
  • Biophilic Design: Biophilic interior design is a style that showcases greenery throughout your home. It literally means “love of plants”. Biophilic enthusiasts have incorporated plants and flowers in all aspects of their homes bringing the outside inside! Color palettes are earth inspired while furniture and accessories are made of natural materials. I’ve written an in depth article about biophilic home decor if you’d like a deeper dive.
  • Japandi Style: Japandi home decor style combines Scandinavian and Japanese interior design. Although geographically and culturally different they share some core principles that make it a match made in heaven. It’s rooted in minimalism, nature and earth tones. Check out my article on how you can decorate Japandi.
  • Danish Pastel Aesthetic: The Danish pastel aesthetic is a Scandinavian style that values craftsmanship and sustainability, clean lines, simplistic furniture and the use of natural organic materials. Where it differs from the “normal” Nordic design we are used to is its use of bright pastels rather than muted earth color tones. This trend gained popularity on tik tok and is predicted to find its way into the mainstream in 2023.

Integrate Classic Traditional Home Decor Styles

As you look forward into the new year take a step backward into the past. There has been a massive resurgence of decor inspired by the olden days, a space that pays tribute to a time in history.  It’s a nostalgia for simpler times.

Here are some of the traditional design styles that will make a comeback in 2023.

  • 1970s Interior Design: The 70s are defined by shag carpets, bold colors, earthy color schemes, rattan accessories, macrame and retro groovy vibes. In the coming year, It’s expected that interior design will see the incorporation of these 1970s styles into modern decor. Ashley Kinierm from The Spruce highlights trends of the 70s that are back in style.
  • Victorian Era: This period spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. The decor of this time was the incorporation of dark moody colors, maximalist ornaments, heavy furnishing, and gothic revival architecture. This style first gained traction in the interior design space since the popularity of Netflix’s hit tv series Bridgerton and will continue to make an imprint in 2023.
  • Mid-Century Modern: This period spans from the 1930s to 1960s. It’s defined by clean lines, organic forms, woods, minimal embellishments and muted tones. This design style has become extremely popular over the last 2 years and is expected to have a continued impact in interior design.
  • Modern Art Deco Trend: Art deco was popular during the 1920s to 1930s. Its main characteristics are geometric shapes, mirror finishes, metal furnishing, pointed edges, big crystal chandeliers and rich colors. If you are someone who loves over-the-top and luxury then consider incorporating this design style into your home for 2023.
  • Hollywood regency: This design style has its origins in the 1920s to the 1950s, the golden age of cinematic Hollywood. Hollywood regency style is defined by the use of bold colors, metallics, glass accents, small-scale furniture, gold accents, black and white, vibrant colors, silks, furs and velvets. It’s the beginning of what we know now as Hollywood glam and we will begin to see more of this style incorporated into home decor in the coming years.

Dark Interior Design Styles For A Moody vibe

I’ve noticed that there is this movement from minimalist soft decor to darker moodier and more eclectic interior design styles. People are craving something different and as we head into 2023 we will begin to see a trend toward somber and moody design styles.

Here are some dark interior design style ideas for 2023

  • Cyberpunk Style: Cyberpunk is a sci-fi concept that is defined by technology, digital realism, futuristic vibes and neon lights, creating a dystopian retro feel. It’s a mix of 1940s film noirs, 90s goth, and the digital age. Its overall vibe is dark with neon lights used to illuminate a space.
  • Gothic Interior Design: Ornate decorations, dark colors, heavy furniture, stained glass and pointed arches are key elements of the Gothic Revival. This somber home decor style is gaining popularity as people begin to embrace a more moody, maximalist and architectural vibe.
  • Steampunk Decor: Steampunk is another sci-fi fantasy-inspired interior design. It’s a mix of Victorian elegance, gothic moods and industrial machinery with a retro-futuristic twist. This home decor style is fascinating and I have written an in-depth article about decorating steampunk if you’d like a closer look.
  • Dark Academia: The love of higher learning has spilled into interior home design. This aesthetic is inspired by vintage decor, dark moody color palettes, rich textures, display of education, layered lighting and heavy wood furniture.

In Conclusion
